What is Chase’s Refer-A-Friend program?
The Chase Refer-A-Friend program is the issuer’s bonus program that allows you to earn rewards or cash back if you refer someone via a special application link to an eligible card and they are approved for the card.
To be eligible to refer someone and receive the bonus, you have to log into your account via Chase’s website or mobile app and get a personalized URL to share with the friend or business that is going to apply. You can send them the link via text or email. The Refer-A-Friend program only applies to eligible cards and the person who applies through your link must be a new applicant and be approved for the card for you to receive the referral bonus.
How to refer a friend to Chase
There are just a few steps to refer someone to an eligible Chase personal or business card:
- Log into your Chase account. You can log in via the website or mobile app using your username and password.
- Navigate to the Refer-A-Friend section. On the Website, you’ll find this at the bottom right-hand side of the page where it says “Refer friends. Earn rewards.” On your mobile device, scroll down until you see it.
- Click on the “Refer friends now” button and it will take you to a new page that shows you what cards you are eligible to refer to others for a bonus. You’ll typically only be able to refer others to cards that are in the same “family” as a card you own. For example, if you own a card_name, you can refer someone to either that or the card_name card. The card_name referral bonus is the same as the card_name referral bonus at the time of this writing.
- Copy the unique link in the box using the “Copy link” button. You can then share this link via email, text or by posting it on your social media account.
- Earn points. If anyone applies for and is approved for one of the cards through your referral link, you’ll receive the specified number of bonus points, up to the referral cap.
The amount of points you can earn and the associated cap on referral points will vary by card. Here’s how much you can earn on each referral for an eligible card and the associated earning caps.

Strategies to maximize the Chase referral bonus
In an ideal world, you’d refer everyone you know to a card you have and enough people would sign up for you to hit that maximum referral bonus amount. But unless you happen to know a number of people actively seeking a new card that aligns with what you’re offering, getting referral bonuses can be challenging. Here are some strategies that may work for you.
- Explain why you like your card. For example, if you’re out to dinner with friends and you pay with a card that earns solid rewards on dining, explaining why you benefit from the card can resonate with someone whose card doesn’t earn as many rewards on the meal.
- Post on social media. Most of us are connected to a network that extends beyond friends to acquaintances at every level of familiarity. Consider posting a referral link with a brief note about why the card is a good fit for and you may get lucky from someone in your network who thinks the card might be right for them as well.
- Join referral link sites. You might find some success posting your referral link on certain Reddit sites or other credit card blogs that allow you to post your referral links.
Potential issues with Chase Refer-A-Friend
In any program that relies on several things aligning perfectly you’re bound to have some glitches, and you may find some with the Chase referral process. For example, one thing to know about the program is that it can take up to eight weeks to receive any bonus points from referrals in your account.
You also have to be mindful of the referral bonus caps. If you were fortunate enough to have eight people sign up through your link for a Chase Sapphire card, you’re only going to get 75,000 bonus points as that’s the cap for those card referrals and not a full 80,000 points.
Another issue is that the referral link you provide to a friend or associate may not be as good as the publicly available offer.
If you haven’t received your referral bonus points yet, or you have another related issue, you can contact Chase customer service by calling the number on the back of your card or the credit card customer service number at 1-800-432-3117.
